Samsung officially announced the Galaxy S24 series at its Unpacked 2024 event in San Jose, California, today. The new lineup of flagship smartphones announced today includes three models similar to last year’s S23 series, namely, the Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. The new phones pack a lot of upgraded internal and external hardware as well as plenty of AI features.

The entry-level Galaxy S24 and the middle-tier S24 Plus both sport slightly larger screens than their predecessors, measuring 6.2 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively. The technology underneath remains the same, as both the S24 and S24+ offer AMOLED displays with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and now a boosted peak brightness of 2600 nits. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S24 Ultra keeps its 6.8-inch AMOLED 120Hz display, but the front screen is now flat.

In terms of design, not much has changed, as all the models feature flat black and individual cutouts for the camera sensors. Durability-wise, the S24 Ultra comes with a Titanium build for improved drop resistance, like the iPhone 15 Pro models, while the S24 and S24+ stick with the familiar Armor Aluminum frames. The Galaxy S24 Ultra also benefits from the brand-new Corning Gorilla Armor, which offers better durability and readability compared to the previous generation. It is worth noting that all the models have IP68 dust and water resistance.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, which, compared to the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, features a faster Cortex-X4 core at up to 3.4GHz. This chipset will be used in all global versions of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. In contrast, the Galaxy S24 and S24+ will come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in certain regions, but in places like Europe and most of Asia, they’ll use Samsung’s own Exynos 2400 chipset. We’ll soon provide a detailed breakdown of which region gets which chipset.

When it comes to RAM, both the S24 Ultra and S24 Plus have 12GB of RAM in all models, a bump from 8GB in last year’s model. You’ll find storage options ranging from 256GB to 512GB on the S24 Plus to a whopping 1TB on the S24 Ultra. On the other hand, the S24 maintains 8GB of RAM for both its 128GB and 256GB models.

Taking a look at the back, the Galaxy S24 and S24+ feature the same triple-camera setup as the predecessor, containing a 50MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. On the Galaxy S24 Ultra, though, things have changed a bit. The top-tier model features the same 200MP primary camera, 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP 3x telephoto zoom lens as the S23 Ultra, but the 10MP 10x zoom lens has been swapped for a 50MP 5x zoom sensor.

In terms of battery capacity, the standard S24 gets a 100mAh increase and now boasts a 4,000mAh battery, while the mid-tier S24 Plus and the top-tier S24 Ultra feature 4,900mAh and 5,000mAh batteries, respectively. Charging speeds, both wired and wireless, remain the same at 25W for the vanilla S24 and 45W for the Plus and the Ultra models.

Samsung S24 Tone Tweak AI feature

A big focus this time is on the AI features that Samsung has added to the Galaxy S24 series. The company has partnered with Google to deliver AI features on the S24 series, benefiting from the Google Cloud’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology, while the phones run Gemini Nano — the same AI engine powering the Pixel 8 Pro — natively on-device. So, what exactly do these AI features have to offer? Let’s take a look:

    • Live Translation: With this feature, the Galaxy S24 can translate spoken conversations in real-time, even during phone calls, allowing you to communicate in your native language.
    • Tone Tweak: Using this feature, you can easily adjust the tone of your texts, emails, and messages to your liking with a simple tap. The best part is that it works seamlessly across several languages and is not only limited to English.
    • Text Summary: This feature can summarize large portions of texts in just a few seconds.
    • Voice Note: The recorder app can now identify different speakers in a meeting and generate a summary of the discussion using AI.
    • AI Zoom and Edit: Samsung is also making use of AI to improve its camera experience. AI Zoom allows users to add background blur and improve photos even at high zoom levels. The AI Edit feature enables you to expand your images beyond their original size using AI, and even move objects within the image.
